My name is Laura Pinzón and I'm currently in the fifth semester of Chemical Engineering at Universidad de La Sabana. My journey to university has been an exciting one, though not without its challenges. This is due to my family's economic situation, which has been affected.
I come from a beautiful family, composed of my two parents, my brother, and my sister. Despite the adversities, we have been a united family. Our story begins in 2003 when my mother was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, when I was only 18 months old. Over time, her physical and motor condition has deteriorated. Although my mother is now completely dependent and uses a wheelchair, it doesn't stop us from finding joy in life.
Of course, her condition requires constant care. We have gone through difficult times, with nurses at home, and my father stopped working to take care of her full-time, while my brother and I continued with our studies. This meant a decrease in family income. Thanks to the generosity of close family members and friends, we have managed to survive and maintain our unity as a family. Despite all the difficulties, my brother and I continue with our studies because we know this is what our parents have wished for us. They may not be able to leave us a material inheritance, but they have given us the gift of a solid education.
When I finished school with honors and received a scholarship from the OCMAES Foundation to study at an excellent university, many people who initially doubted my parents' decisions and mine finally believed in us. I am enormously grateful to the OCMAES Foundation and to all the people who make it possible for my dream of graduating and making my parents and siblings happy to come true. This scholarship is of immeasurable value to me, as it is a testimony of the support of people who, despite not knowing me personally, believe in me and in my future.
